Surgery to correct phimosis is called postectomy or circumcision.
We must remember that phimosis is the difficulty or inability to fully expose the glans (head of the penis) when the foreskin (skin covering the head of the penis) is pulled.
Patients with a short balanopreputial frenulum, excess preputial skin, paraphimosis or narrowing of the preputial ring will undergo the same surgical procedure.
In adult men, it can also trigger sexual performance and even penile cancer.
However, loss of sensitivity, decreased erection or decreased penis size are myths.
Benefits of performing Postectomy surgery
1) It allows for a much more efficient and adequate hygiene;
2) Decreases around 40% the chance of catching STDs during unprotected sexual intercourse;
3) Prevents and eliminates fungal infection in the penis (candidiasis).
How is phimosis surgery performed?
The surgery lasts about 30 minutes after anesthesia, a compressive dressing is made. The total procedure takes around an hour.
There is no sensation of pain when the anesthesia ends. Even so, we left all the necessary medications, such as aanalgesics, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, so that the patient does not have discomfort.
Phimosis surgery: postoperative
The main recommendations are to rest, use a local cold compress, do not wet the dressing and only change it the next day. In case of erection, which should appear, wet your wrists (believe me, it works!) and put on cold compresses.
The return to work, if it is some activity without physical effort, can be already the next day. Patients who work with varying degrees of effort may require a certificate of 2 to 5 days, if necessary.
In the days after the surgery, the stitches will fall out on their own and the healing will make everything go back to normal.
After 30 days of surgery, sexual intercourse will be allowed.
